Drainage Problems Transformed into a Backyard Oasis

What can be done with a suburban property with a gorgeous view on a sloping hillside with stormwater issues? A daunting task for sure; managing erosion, creating a comfortable grilling/dining area and opening a safe walkway to enjoy the view from a cozy firepit seemed next to impossible. Our vision for this incredible home first included rebuilding the insufficient sized deck with a two-terraced design that allows for stepping just outside the kitchen to grill and then following a few steps down to the mezzanine landing for dining and relaxing. Gates installed under the grill deck created storage and our signature black metal baluster handrail design keeps the gaze on the beautiful woods instead of the deck rail.

The mezzanine deck steps directly onto a natural, mortared flagstone walkway that meanders its way along the crest of the hill and opens to a durable granite fire ring with comfortable seating. Woodland plantings soften the hardscape and help slow the stormwater flow. This destination offers the joy of occasional fire-side chats and daily happiness as you look out the rear windows and walk the path with your eyes.

The valley at the bottom of the hillside offered the greatest challenge to this renovation. Storm water flooded in from all directions to create an intermittent river with immense erosion powers. Shady Grove brought in 12 tons of natural boulders with hundreds of native wetland plants and hand placed them to create a naturally functioning stream bed. What a gorgeous long-term solution for an unsightly and dangerous space. No more quick sand!
